A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
