Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to contest certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
